Low Volume Toilet Subsidy Program ends soon

If you want to get in on the Low Volume Toilet Subsidy Program, you have until March 31, 2010 to do so.

This is a great program that encourages water conservation by replacing inefficient toilets with new toilets that significantly reduce the amount of wastewater discharged.  Each household of four that converts to new toilets is expected to save in excess of 40,000 litres of water per year!

Fish Creek Community Forest Improvements

The City of Fort St. John has received a grant to improve the safety and usability of the trails in the Community Forest. Stage one of the work is the removal of hazardous trees along all of the trails within the Community Forest. The contractor is removing any hazards within a 30 metre range of the trails, and will be chipping the trees that are felled and re-introducing the chips back to the forest floor. This stage of the project will be ongoing until the end of March 2010. In May, both coniferous and deciduous seedlings will be planted in the forest to replace the trees that were cut down.

Connie Richter of North Peace KidSport received a generous $4,000 donation on February 3, 2010 from Ron Hutchings of Aux Sable Canada, a Calgary based midstream gas processing company.  Representatives of Aux Sable Canada were interested in giving back to the community in the Fort St. John area with a donation directed toward youth and children.

The North Peace KidSport organization has been serving the local community since 1998 and was established to provide financial assistance to children and youth to become involved in organized sport.  In 2009 North Peace KidSport was able to assist over 40 children with sport registration fees.  The local KidSport chapter is supported and sustained through the generous contributions from community supporters like Aux Sable Canada.

Annual Tax Sale

The Local Government Act requires that every municipality in BC holds a tax sale for properties delinquent (3 years owing) in taxes. This tax sale is held on the last Monday in September, in council chambers, at 10:00AM. Owners have until that time in which to pay the delinquent portion, plus interest, to avoid going to tax sale. If payment is not made prior to 10:00AM on Tax sale day, the property is then sold to the highest bidder during an open auction. Bidding for these properties will begin at the upset price which includes all taxes owing, plus penalties, interest, Land Title Act fees, and an administration fee. The payment from the successful bidder for the tax sale property is then held in trust by the City. The City registers a Tax Sale Lien on the property with Land Titles. It is important to note that the purchaser of this property cannot enter the property or do renovations unless it is critical to maintain the structural integrity of the property. The owner has one year to redeem the property by paying all taxes owing plus interest. If the owner does redeem his property the bidder is then refunded his payment, plus interest to the date of redemption by the owner.
