You may have had your new garbage cart delivered to your home already by Public Works staff, and this is a quick reminder that the new collection system with the carts does not begin until September 1. Please do not use the bin until that week. Any garbage placed in the cart will not be collected.

The City of Fort St John will be putting on free community events all week starting with Carnival Night Wednesday August 11th from 5:00pm- 8:00 pm at Centennial Park. There will be fun games, prizes, inflatables, crafts and face painting.
On Thursday August 12th there will be a Family Scavenger Hunt held at the Visitor Center with lots of prizes to be won!
There will be a double feature Movie in the Park on Friday August 13th at Centennial Park. Fun starting at 7:00 pm with Guitar Hero, Air Guitar Contest and Hula Hoop Contest. Movie starting at 9:30pm. Don't forget to bring a chair and blanket!
At Centennial Park on Saturday August 14th from 12:00pm-2:00pm there will be a Teddy Bear Picnic and from 6:00pm-8:30pm a Family Outdoor Concert/ Dance will be going on.

The City of Fort St. John has been advised today that the
Province has approved Disaster Financial Assistance (DFA) for
residents of the community impacted by flooding as a result of
the July 29th storm. To be eligible for assistance the damage
must be from an uninsurable event such as overland flooding.
Sewer backup and other insurable damage is not eligible for
DFA assistance.
A Town Hall meeting is scheduled for 7:00 pm on Monday,
August 9th at the Enerplex to provide information to the
community. Representatives from the Provincial Emergency
Program will be on hand to explain the Disaster Financial
Assistance program and provide information regarding the
claims process. All residents impacted by the July 29th event are
encouraged to attend.

The City of Fort St. John is currently working to assess the damages sustained in the community as a result of the rain storm on July 19, 2010. The City is requesting assistance from the public in collecting information regarding the number of homes and businesses affected. Residents and businesses are encouraged to contact the City of Fort St. John and provide information regarding the type and extent of damage sustained. Once the scope of the incident has been determined the City will provide Provincial Emergency Program Coordinators with the information to determine if any level of support will be provided in response to any recovery that may be needed.
The second “Music That Moves” you event of the summer is happening soon! Wednesday evening July 21st from 7pm to 9pm you can hop aboard a City bus on the Southside route and listen to some amazing tunes from local musicians, they won’t just be singing Wheels on the Bus either!
This fantastic family event is also FREE for everyone so climb aboard and literally Rock & Roll along and find out why we are the Music Capital of Northern BC!

It's that time of year again when all the gardeners hard work has paid off and flowers are blooming! Its the 2010 Garden Contest as part of Communities in Bloom and we want all those amazing gardeners to show off their beautiful gardens....NO MATTER THE SIZE!

The Parklane Estates access through 85 Avenue will be closed for road construction beginning at 7:00am Monday, June 21, 2010.
Tonight (June 16) is the City's first of three Music that Moves You events. The idea is to try out the public transit system for free and enjoy some live music at the same time.
For the first event, the bus will be following the Central Route from 7 - 9pm. You can either join the bus at the Cultural Centre or hop on (and off) anywhere along the route. There will be six musicians performing throughout the night on the bus.
This will be a fun night out that the whole family can enjoy!

For the first event, the bus will be travelling the Central Route. You can either start the route at the Cultural Centre or you can hop on (and off) at any stop along the Central Route. Six different musicians will be playing throughout the two hours on the bus.

Are you and your child looking for something to do during the day? The City of Fort St. John is starting a FREE Stroller Fit program beginning April 26th. This a 6 week program that will be offered 3 days a week; Monday, Wednesday & Fridays from 10:00am – 11:00am. This is a great opportunity for community members to meet others in the community and exercise at the same time! There will be an instructor provided to lead the walks which will take place in the Enerplex and the Fort St. John walking trails. In 2009, Fort St. John was designated as Northern BC's Music Capital. Our first event celebrating that designation is called "Music that Moves You".
On June 16, July 21, and August 18 from 7:30 - 9:30 pm, you can hop on a transit bus and enjoy live music as the bus travels around the city. This is also a great way to try out the transit system! Each event will feature a different bus route - so you can try out all three throughout the summer. And the best part - the event is free! Support local musicians and try out transit for no cost.
For each event, you can either start at the Cultural Centre or you can join the bus at any stop along the chosen route. And of course, you can get off at any stop you like.

Trees are only $25, but there is a limit of one per household and the trees are available on a first come, first serve basis. As well, you must live in the City of Fort St. John - so make sure you bring valid id to show that you live in the city with you.

The Fort St. John Community Awards Gala will be held on Thursday, April 15, 2010. People from the community submitted more than 50 nominations for the 20 Awards that will be handed out. As well, Mayor Bruce Lantz will recognize several people with the Mayor’s Award of Excellence.

The Fort St. John Fire Department is hosting its second annual Firefighter's Charity Ball at the Pomeroy Hotel on April 10.
All proceeds from the event will go towards the BC Professional Firefighters Burn Fund which provides support to burn victims.
Cocktails begin at 6:00 pm with a dinner and dance to follow.
The night will feature live music by Dayna Manning and Adam Winn, a silent and live auction, and fantastic door prizes. Everyone welcome!

The City of Fort St. John is undertaking the process of amending the Official Community Plan (OCP) to reflect the community’s commitment to environmental sustainability. The proposed amendment includes a new section on Environmental Sustainability which states Council’s objectives on greenhouse gas emissions reductions, and reflects their vision on land use, transportation, buildings, solid waste and alternative energy.
The open house will be held on March 25th, 2010 from 5:00 to 7:00

The North Peace Lesuire Pool will be offering a Babysitters Course for youth aged 11-15 years on March 27 and April 3 from 12:00pm - 4:00pm.
This 8 hour certified course helps youth gain the skills they need to safely and responsibly care for children and infants as well as the basic first aid skills to handle emergencies with confidence.

This is a great program that encourages water conservation by replacing inefficient toilets with new toilets that significantly reduce the amount of wastewater discharged. Each household of four that converts to new toilets is expected to save in excess of 40,000 litres of water per year!

The City of Fort St. John has received a grant to improve the safety and usability of the trails in the Community Forest. Stage one of the work is the removal of hazardous trees along all of the trails within the Community Forest. The contractor is removing any hazards within a 30 metre range of the trails, and will be chipping the trees that are felled and re-introducing the chips back to the forest floor. This stage of the project will be ongoing until the end of March 2010. In May, both coniferous and deciduous seedlings will be planted in the forest to replace the trees that were cut down.
Public Works Announcement The Public Works Department is falling dangerous trees in the Community Forest today. Please make sure to obey the posted signs to ensure your safety.
Seniors Yoga Fitness is a pilot project designed specifically for seniors. The instructor will incorporate a range of skill levels and poses to challenge each participant and attend to their limitations. Get ready for a new and fun experience that you won’t want to miss! The program has been discounted as our instructors are in the last phase of becoming certified Yoga Leaders. Please remember to bring your own yoga mat, water bottle and hand block if needed.
