The Fort St. John Community Arts Council (FSJCAC) is working for a better community by supporting and developing the arts and culture.  We strive to facilitate Fort St. John residents to reach and expand their potential through the arts, advocate for the arts, artists, and arts groups in Fort St. John, network and connect with all those interested and concerned about the arts, promote the role of the arts in building the quality of life and enhancing positive lifestyles, educate the public about the arts as well as market the arts and artists in and around Fort St. John.
Candidates are being sought for the Arts Council Board for our 2011 fiscal year, beginning in September.  The Board of Directors will establish policy, make governance decisions, and provide oversight of the operations of the FSJCAC.

Now Seeking Coordinator Position for High on Ice Festival

Do you have a background in event planning?  The Arts Council is seeking a qualified individual to coordinate the ice and snow events for the 2011 High On Ice Festival.

The successful candidate will oversee all areas of the festival pertaining to ice and snow carving activities including:

    * Professional ice carving competition
    * Amateur ice and snow carving competition
    * Annual ice carving workshop in November

The coordinator will, in most cases, work out of their own home or office, though they will have access to the Fort St. John Community Arts Council office, located at the ArtsPost facility, as necessary.  The coordinator will liaise with volunteers and event sponsors and reports to the Arts Council’s Executive Director.  

Experience in sponsorship solicitation considered an asset.   

This is a 6 month contract position with competitive wages. The coordinator must be available from August 15, 2010 through February 15, 2011.

Arts Council to host Toga Party

The Fort St. John Community Arts Council will host its first ever Toga Party, April 10th at On the Rocks Nightclub. Doors open at 8pm. 

This event will serve as fund raiser for the Community Arts Council, with proceeds supporting the continued operation of the ArtsPost facility.  The ArtsPost is a storefront building dedicated to promoting and supporting arts and culture in Fort St. John. The ArtsPost is home to the Arts Council’s administrative office as well as meeting and workspace for its 24 (and growing) member groups and includes the North Peace Potters’ Guild studio and the North Peace Spinners and Weavers Guilds’ workspace. The ArtsPost is located at 10320  94th Avenue. 

Guests are invited to don their best toga or attire recalling the days of ancient Greece and Rome.  Creativity is highly encouraged (floral sheets make excellent togas). Prizes for best costumes will be awarded.

Regional Heritage Fair

Celebrate Canadian History! Join in the first Northern Region Heritage Fair as part of the nationwide Fairs Program (www.histori.ca) which encourages students to explore Canadian heritage in a dynamic, hands-on learning environment.

Students from Grades 4 – 9 use the medium of their choice to share stories about Canadian heroes, legends, milestones and achievements – and present results of their research at a Class/School Fair and then, if chosen, the Regional Fair.

Come take part in the wonderful world of ice carving on Saturday, January 17, 2009 and snow sculpting on Sunday, January 18, 2009 in Centennial Park in Fort St. John as part of the 5th Annual High On Ice Festival. Ice carving and snow sculpting is an opportunity for your colleagues and friends to get together to create something that is representative of your work, leisure pursuits, or just whimsical.

North Peace Potters' Guild

The North Peace Potters’ Guild has undertaken to exhibit “Finger play” for 3 weeks in November.  This prestigious show of 60 small pieces of ceramic art and craft compiled by the Potters Guild of British Columbia contains work by 60 of BC’s best potters and ceramic artists. The show is the culmination of a juried competition open to British Columbia residents.

Kilnhouse Studio Now Open!

If you are looking for one of a kind pottery and ceramics, then look no further! Local artist, Shannon Butler has opened her much anticipated Kilnhouse Studio where she sells ceramic art such as mosaics, necklaces, bowls, jugs, as well as paintings. She also has a section for discounted wares. Kilnhouse Studio is located at 10510 - 101st Avenue and is open Saturdays from 10am - 6pm.

Northern Groove is expanding!

Northern Groove magazine is the Peace Region’s link to what’s happening in the local music scene. Produced right here in Fort St. John, it’s focus is on local bands and keeps up on live shows coming to the area.
