Pilot project helps Fort St. John & Area employers address skills shortages

VANCOUVER, BC.  --While all the indicators are telling us our economy is struggling, there are signs the turnaround may not be far off.  And when that happens, we need to deal with the labour shortages still facing many of British Columbia's key industries, including trades, construction and hospitality.

An aging population and declining birthrates are just some of the reasons why those shortages haven't gone away, despite the current economic slowdown.

For many employers, one solution to the labour crisis is to hire skilled, internationally-trained workers.  Last year, to make it easier for business owners to access the information they needed to hire foreign-trained workers, with funding from the federal and provincial governments, the B.C. Chamber of Commerce published an employer's guide, "Quick Links to Hiring Foreign Workers," that was distributed to local Chamber of Commerce offices and made available online.

Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Homecoming Welcome Luncheon on April 29th for the Morrison Brothers, everyone welcome

The Chamber of Commerce is proud to host a Homecoming Welcome on April 29th for the Morrison Boys, who might have moved away from Fort St. John a few years back but never really left the town.

Denny and Jay have emerged as a pair of the stars of international speed skating.  The brothers are cheered on by their parents Dennis and Carol, and supporters from the Peace Country and 18, 000 or so in Fort St. John.

Going back to the '60s, the undersized burg has produced a steady stream of provincial and national champions and an Olympian in Linda Johnson, who competed in Lillehammerin '94 and Nagano in '98.  The dreaded outdoor oval was also in use up until 2006, and it will give way to an indoor oval ( in our newly constructed Enerplex) --one of three in Canada -- which is scheduled to be completed this August.

This was the incubator which produced the Morrison brothers, who were actually born in nearby Chetwynd before the family, with sister Julie, moved to the big city.  The plan, originally, was to introduce both boys to skating in preparation for hockey.

Fort St. John & District Chamber of Commerce AGM

All members of the Fort St. John & District Chamber of Commerce are encouraged to attend the Annual General Meeting on April 15th at 6pm.
