Update: Weekend Apartment Fires

Sterling Management offices on 100th street are closed to the general public today, as the company continues to focus on helping displaced residents of the 93rd avenue apartment complex, which for all practical purposes was destroyed by a Friday night fire.

About 60 tenants are looking for a new place to live, and Sterling believes it has enough vacancies at other locations in the city to accommodate them all.

However, since many of the fire victims did not have tenant’s insurance, donations are continuing to be accepted at the Toten Mall drop off location behind the Staples outlet set up during the weekend.

As for the fire, there’s a chance the cause may never be known because the structural damage…particularly at the north end of the complex, facing 93rd avenue…is so severe, Deputy Fire Chief, Curtis Redpath, has speculated a safe on-site inspection of the ruins may not be possible.

As reported earlier, this fire followed another one associated with an explosion at an apartment complex on 102nd avenue between 100th and 98th streets, at about 7 o’clock on Friday night.

The RCMP has said drug activity in one of suites may have been the cause, but that has not yet been confirmed.

Again in this case, all of the building’s residents were safely evacuated, without any serious injuries reported.
