Shaw cable services disrupted

Tuesday, June 16, 2009

Those who get their internet from Shaw Communications may have to wait a little longer to get their service back.

Shaw has confirmed both television and internet signals in Fort St. John, Dawson Creek, and other Peace region communities have been interrupted, after a fibre-optic cable serving the region was severed on Tueday morning.

Shaw Vice-president of Operations Steve Baker says the problem has at least been identified.

Baker says it’s tough to determine how long the outage will last for, though as of 3pm on Tuesday, he was optimistic service could return this evening.

Service has been out since around 11:30 Tuesday morning.

Update:  Service was restored at around 9:30pm Tuesday.

This is totally

This is totally unacceptable. The internet is a basic utility to economic development, business and life today. The fact that a single incident at a construction site somewhere can cause the entire internet for two communities go down is totally inexcusable. It is time for our local politicians and companies such as Shaw to step up to the plate and fight for a redundant internet connection to the outside world from this area.

What's new

This is just another reason why service providers in FSJ need competition. Rogers please come to town. All the cell phones here, the internet and home phones would make them a killing. Shaw needs to step their game up. Only one line in and out of FSJ is a total joke. Why must we suffer? Cause we live in FSJ.

It would also be nice if we

It would also be nice if we had contractors in this area that were diligent, and did what they were supposed to by making sure all utility companies are notified before riping and tearing into the ground, preventing alot of the problems utility companies have with dig ups. That is totally unacceptable.

Talk about over reacting.

People it was an accident. things like this happen. stop acting like it was the end of the world. go outside, read a book to fill in the time that the little time the internet was down. And as for the business aspect of thing. it lets people catch up on all the filing and clean up they had to do.

Reality

Rogers does not have the infrastructure to supply communications to this region. It is not economically viable for that company, there not a large enough market. Shaw's system of fiber-optic cables is currently the only viable way to supply signal to this remote area. This is like gripping about not having Flying cars available because you catch a flat tire.
