Rock Slide Update

A bus driver and his lone passenger are telling how they narrowly escaped the slide on the Sea to Sky Highway. Peter Skeels was driving the Perimeter Whistler Express bus Tuesday night when the slide hit. Company spokesman Mike Cafferky picks up the story there….
Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon, who toured the site yesterday said it could take five days to re-open the highway between Vancouver and Whistler. He also said this….
NDP leader Carole James says the slide raises red flags about the Olympic highway. Premier Gordon Campbell agrees, saying the cliffs above the highway will have to be examined, before the Olympic Games, to try to prevent future slides on the route.

However, geologists say the site of the slide is in an area notorious for such collapses, with natural fractures in the rocks above the highway. They say experts try to identify the most dangerous slopes but the problem is too big to make upgrades on every slope.
