The Prince George Fire Centre has confirmed a fire is burning in the Tommy Lakes area in Northern BC.

A Fire Information Officer says the fire covers around 20 hectares right now. Jillian Chimko says the fire actually started around a week ago, from a lightning strike, but has reignited in the past couple of days due to hot and dry weather in the area.

Chimko says the fire is not a threat to any residences, and doesn’t appear to be spreading.

She adds that the fire danger in the North Peace is currently rated from high to extreme, and with the current hot and dry weather, it is particularly important to be careful with cigarettes and campfires.
