A residence in 89 hundredth block of 107th-A Avenue was hit early this morning, by what is being called a suspicious fire.
Chief Fred Burrows says by the time city fire crews arrived at the scene, at about 1.45 am, the rear of the residence was fully involved. No injuries reported but, three adults and, a young child were evacuated. Chief Burrows says fire crews were able to contain the fire before it spread to the rest of the house or the neighbouring house, but the owners are looking at around 125 thousand dollars in damages, mainly to the living room and deck in the back of the house, as well as to the ceiling and attic.
Burrows says the house next door and its garden shed suffered siding damage due to the radiant heat, but fortunately it wasn’t breached by the flames. Constable Jackelynn Passarell confirms the fire is being treated as suspicious, and the local RCMP detachment is investigating. Passarell says officers toured the house today, taking pictures and collecting exhibits for evidence. Passarell says at this point, there doesn’t seem to be any reason why this house in particular was targetted.
Passarell says police don’t have any suspects yet, but rather a number of people they want to speak to. Anyone else who has any information that could prove useful is asked to call the RCMP detachement, at 250 787-8100.
