Forest firefighting costs down this year for BC

Despite a dry summer for many areas of the province, forest firefighting costs are actually down this year from annual averages. This year the province’s forest firefighting bill came in at about 76 million dollars, while the average cost is in the 108 million dollar range.

Forest fires this year burned about 130 square kilometres of the province, down from the annual average of 790 square kilometres.

The figures come after a forest fire this past weekend in the Cecil Lake area claimed about 18 hectares of land. That fire was reported the evening of October 2nd, but a crew of 5 BC Forest Service crew members had that blaze out by Sunday.
