Kwadacha Agreement

The Kwadacha First Nation in northern BC has ratified a final agreement with BC Hydro and the government to address damages over the construction of the massive W.A.C. Bennett dam.

Ninety-five per cent of the ballots cast by Kwadacha members were in favour of a proposed agreement, that addresses damage done decades ago.

The final deal includes a one-time payment of about 15 million dollars to the First Nation, and annual payments of about 1.6 million.

The First Nation filed a lawsuit against B.C., Canada and BC Hydro in 2001, claiming damages from the construction of the dam and the Williston reservoir.

The Kwadacha Nation is the home of the Tsek’ene people and is located at Fort Ware, about 570 kilometres north of Prince George.
