MacKenzie Mill to stay closed until Spring

he opening of a bankrupt pulp mill in northern B.C. has been put on hold until next spring due to the global economic woes.

It’s the second time that Alberta-based Worthington Industries has put off the opening of the bankrupt Pope and Talbot pulp mill in Mackenzie.

The company says the latest delay will give it more time for more financial negotiations in more difficult economic conditions.

Worthington initially planned to restart the mill in mid-November, but workers were told last week that the plan was put on hold for 60 days.

Veteran worker Rick Berry says employees at the mill feel helpless and are left wondering whether it will ever open at all.

He says he has no choice now but to leave Mackenzie, located about 175 kilometre north of Prince George, and search for another job.
