8-1-1 begins in BC

There’s a new way to call for health information in BC.

Starting today, you’ll be able to simply dial 8-1-1 and get access to health information.

Minster in charge, George Abbott, says it’s different from the nursing line because people will have access to dieticians, pharmacists, nurses and a plethora other health programs.

Abbott says it’s costing just over three million dollars to set up and will cost about 5.5 million dollars per year to maintain – a cost he says is worth it.

Abbott says he’s not sure how much money it might save, but at worst it will be revenue neutral.

He’s hoping the new line will also help take the burden off the demand for doctors.

The service is available throughout BC, and is the first of its kind in the country.
