Fort Hotel demolition update

Fort St. John’s most infamous eyesore is finally coming down—albeit slowly.

In an update at Monday night’s council meeting, Director of Facilities Jim Rogers said the Cowboy’s Saloon area of the Fort Hotel has been safely demolished and the materials have been disposed of. Rogers added that leaks in the building have been stopped, and the flooded basement of the hotel has been drained.

The next step for the building will be an environmental review this Wednesday. The review will determine if any of the materials in the building will require special disposal. Once that data is available, Rogers says, the plan to demolish the remainder of the building can proceed.

 

The city declared the hotel a nuisance property in April and has been working with the owner since then to get the building demolished.
