ConocoPhillips is reporting a "significant step" towards extinguishing the fire at a well site near Chetwynd. At around 2:30 yesterday afternoon, crews succesfully installed a capping stack on the burning well, meaning an attempt to snuff out the flames could take place later this week. The fire began the morning of November 11th, during routine drilling. It’s located approximately 30 kilometres east of Chetwynd, at the Groundbirch well site. ConocoPhillips says ongoing air monitoring has not indicated any adverse readings, and no-one has been hurt in the sparking or fighting of the fire.
