Huskies start weekend with a bang

It’s a huge weekend for the Huskies, and they got exactly the start they were looking for, with a 7-3 win over Dawson Creek on Friday night.

The pups were up 2-1 after 20 minutes of play, and an early Jr. Canucks goal made it look like the game would be close till the end.

But, the Jr. Canucks got into penalty trouble, and the Huskies powerplay found its top gear.

5 minutes into the second, Cash Brinkworth scored a powerplay goal, to put Fort St. John in front. 39 seconds later, newcomer Cam McKinnon scored his first goal as a Husky, on a nice tip on a Jon Spence point shot. A little more than 2 minutes later, McKinnon scored again, and the Huskies were up by 3.

In the third, some rough play started to develop, but the Huskies kept their focus on the game, and played strong until the end.

When the final buzzer sounded, the score was 7-3 for the home team. The Huskies were 4/9 on the powerplay, and goalie Zach Blain had played likely his best game of the season.

There were 4 fights in the game, and that may have been the only category won by Dawson Creek.

Without a doubt, the first star for Fort St. John was Cam McKinnon, who ended up with 4 goals, an assist, and a fight.
Cody Hildebrand also played well in his first game since joining the club from the Midget Tracker-Flyers (Hildebrand did play one game as an AP in the playoffs last year).

No rest for the Huskies though, as they hit the bus early tomorrow morning for the trip to Whitecourt. They take on the 12-1 Wolverines at 8pm on Saturday night, and then visit Slave Lake at 2pm on Sunday. Catch both of the games live on Moose FM.
