Fort St. John could be getting a new taxi company.
The city recently received an application for liscenses for a new competitive taxi operation.
Shortly thereafter, management of Fort St. John Cabs sent a letter to the city, asking that the application be denied. The letter cited a shortage of drivers as an obstacle to better service, not a lack of taxi liscenses. And, the company claims it has invested much in the city, and a new company would simply “cream the surplus business”, without having the obligations that Fort St. John Cabs has.
However, at last night’s regular meeting, council decided it’s not the city’s place to deny competition. Outgoing Councillor Karen Simpson says Fort St. John Cab’s claim that starting a new taxi business would be unwise, isn’t really relevant to the matter at hand.
The new company still needs provincial approval before it can commence operation.
