Update – Well Site could burn for Several Weeks

It could be several weeks before the fire at a ConocoPhillips Well could be out.

The fire broke out at 3:55am Tuesday at Well approximately 30km east of Chetwynd near Groundbirch.  The cause of the fire is still unknown at the this time, but Pat Defoe with Conoco Phillips says they have some ideas

ConocoPhillips has made it clear that no one has been hurt and that there is no danger to the public.  The well is licenced as a sour gas well, but ConocoPhillips believes the well is actually sweet gas.

Safety and Fire Crews remain on scene as they and drill a relief well.  Pat Defoe says the relief well will help them put the fire out.

It could take several weeks before the fire is out.  The flame can be seen from highway 97 in between Dawson Creek and Chetwynd.
