BC Crop Damage

A record crop payout under the provincial crop insurance program this year is predicted to exceed 30 million dollars.

The drought in the Peace Region is one of three key factors…the others being cold snaps and hail in the Okanagan and, a cool wet spring in the Lower Mainland.

Gary Falk, the Director of the province’s risk management branch, which overseas the program, calls the Peace area drought one of the most severe in the past decade and a half.

The Vancouver Sun has quoted Janet Bauman, the office administrator for the BC Grain Producers Association, as saying grain farmers will request the federal government to declare the Peace drought a disaster.

That would clear the way for government funding beyond the provincial crop insurance program.

However, the key to disaster designation will be whether receipts show crop production did not exceed 50 percent of the regional norm.

The biggest insurance payouts so far this year include six and half million for grain crops in the Peace and, another 1.1 million for forage crops, with most of them also in this area.
