Monday night was the inaugural meeting for the new Fort St. John city council.

The two new faces in the chamber were the new mayor, former newspaper publisher Bruce Lantz and a new councillor, realtor Trevor Bolin. In Lantz’s opening speech, he complemented the previous mayor and council on their policies and dedication. Lantz also said he’d help the city continue to care about its citizens and manage its affairs “responsibly and prudently.” In the councillors’ inauguration speeches, they thanked their families, their election teams and the city staff.

Councillor Lori Ackerman said that confidence in Fort St. John is an important thing for every citizen to have, and that the city and council need to move forward together. [asset|aid=692|format=mp3player|formatter=asset_bonus|title=b2cc92ca9729fb72c8a581d11bd0d829-aCKERMAN – mOVING ON_1_Pub.mp3]

Jim Eglinski received a gift from the city for his six years of service. After the meeting, many people were on hand to thank Eglinski in person. The meeting took less than 30 minutes and is probably the shortest council meeting of the electoral term. Council members were elected to various committee roles. Lantz and Ackerman will sit on the PRRD board of directors, Bruce Christensen on the North Peace Economic Development Commission. Bolin will sit on both the Branding the Peace Committee and the UNBC Advisory Committee, with Don Irwin.

The next council meeting will take place Monday, Dec. 8. For more information, check out the city’s website or Energeticcity.ca.
