Labour mobility across the country in April

Canada’s trade ministers have signed an agreement that ensures labour mobility becomes a reality across the country in April.

A committee of federal, provincial and territorial governments has signed an agreement in Ottawa that permits workers from any province or territory fill jobs anywhere in Canada.

The new labour mobility regulations take effect on April 1, 2009.

B.C.’s Trade Minister Ida Chong says the deal is good for Canada because it reduces labour barriers and signals that other cross-country regulations that restrict trade and investment could also fall.

Chong, chairwoman of the internal trade committee, says the lifting of labour mobility restrictions means a doctor from Ontario can now practise medicine in B.C. without taking extra tests or meeting local standards.

She says the provinces and federal government have been trying to loosen Canada’s labour mobility regulations since 1994.
