Avalanche near Tumbler Ridge, BC – one person is dead

Another snowmobiler has died in an avalanche near Tumbler Ridge.

Saturday, January 17th at approximately 2:30 pm a group of six snowmobilers were in the area of the "Back Meadows" on Babcock Mountain.  One of their group had been highmarking at the time of the slide.  The rest of the group was at the bottom of the hill, off to one side and were not taken by the slide.

A lone male was buried by the slide and was not located prior to him perishing.  The male was eventually located with the assistance of other snowmobilers who had been in the area.

The other five members of the group were able to get out of the area without injury following the incident. At this time no names are being released prior to family being notified.

Tumbler Ridge RCMP wants to remind the public to be aware of the avalanche rating for the area that they are in. Also to ensure that you are fully prepared to be in the mountains sledding. This includes taking the needed equipment, ie: probe pole, shovel and locator beacon.
