Ft. St. John Bantam AA-Knights of Columbus Win Tournament!
Ft. St. John Bantam AA-Knights of Columbus played Slave Lake Bantam AA-Thunder in the first game of the Whitecourt Minor Hockey Bantam tournament on Saturday. The first goal was scored by the Thunder at 10:15 in the first period. Jade McMullen evened the score at 6:59, assisted by Kooper Shallow. The Flyers went up by one in the second period when Brent Logan scored on a short handed goat at 3:32 assisted by Logan Daneluk. Daneluk added another goal at 9:49 in the third period, assisted by Shane Rutherford. The Thunder replied with a goal at 3:15 in the third period making the score 3 – 2 for FSJ. Both teams battled furiously for the last 3 minutes of the game but no goals were scored giving the Knights of Columbus a win. Goalie Daimon Derouin stopped 33 out of 35 shots on goal. Fort St. John had 32 shots on the opposition. Both teams had 25 minutes in penalty points.
The second game was against Whitecourt Bantam AA-Carlan Jets. Fort St. John started the game with three unanswered goals scored by Cayle Bell, Blair Karasiuk and Jade McMullin. Assists were contributed by Kyle Leonard, Wyatt Anderson and Kooper Shallow. The Jets came back with two goals in the last 10 minutes of the first period to make the score 3-2 for FSJ. Whitecourt scored another goal at 8:58 in the second period, answered by a goal from Blair Karasiuk at 5:41 making the score 4-3 for FSJ. Whitecourt scored 3 goals in the third period giving them the lead 6-4. At 5:53 Daneluk scored and then again at 3:26 with a powerful slapshot from the blue line. The game ended in a 6-6 tie. Goalie, Turner Gullickson worked hard to keep the opposition from scoring a winning goal. Hard Work Pays Off! The third game against Grande Prairie Bantam AA-AT1 Chiefs was a tight battle ending in a 2-2 tie. Goals were scored by Blair Karasuik and Jade McMullen. The Knights of Columbus Flyers advanced to the final which proved to be a sometimes heart stopping event. The Chiefs scored one in the first period and two in the second period. They followed this with a quick score in the third period making the game 4-0 in their favour. The outcome of the game was looking grim when Brent Loewen scored at 12:15 and 11:56 in the third. Tyler Cresswell added another goal giving the Flyers 3 points on the scoreboard. It looked like the Chiefs would prevail until Blair Karasuik put the puck through the pipes with two seconds remaining in the game. Five minutes of overtime failed to produce a winner so they moved into the shootout. Jade McMullin and Logan Daneluk were able to outmaneuver the Chiefs goalie to produce the winning point. Goalie, Derouin stymied two of the oppositions attempts to put the puck in the net.
The game ended 5-4 in favour of the Ft. St. John AA Bantam Flyers, tournament winners!
