Police were first notified of the disaster at shortly after 2pm on Sunday, when the avalanche struck in a remote mountainous area south of Chetwynd. Recovery efforts were delayed on Sunday, as the area was determined to still be at risk for another slide.

13 of the 14 members of the snowmobiling group have been accounted for, leaving just one man still missing in the area. The man is thought to be deceased – his identity has not yet been released.
