A withering second half full court press by the DP Todd Trojans proved too much for the Dr. Kearney Cougars this morning as they fell 56-30 to drop out of contention for the North Central Zone Junior Boys Championship being played in Vanderhoof.
The Cougars drop into the Consolation Bracket and will play the Fort Nelson Huskies at 6:00 PM to determine fifth and sixth places in the eight team tournament.
The Huskies simply never woke up in time and were crushed by Quesnel Secondary in an early game today.
Dr. Kearney looked good for the first half of their game with DP Todd, leading 20 – 14 after sixteen minutes but couldn’t match the Trojans intense full court pressure after the break.
"We simply haven’t mastered all the little things we needed to do on the Press Break," head coach Lars Jorgensen offered in analysis after the loss. "Our athletes are as good as any here, but we haven’t played at this level often enough to be fully competitive. More time, more repetitions and more games and we’re right there … just not this time," he added. "I would say that we played as well as we could in view of what we’ve been able to teach to this point. I am pleased with our effort and the way the boys have conducted themselves. They certainly have no reason to be distressed with their play or the fact that we lost to two good teams."
Brennan Eklund, Eric Hansen and Graham Spitzer each scored eight points in the loss. Jorgensen singled out Spitzer for his consistent play along with point guard Sterne Jorgensen. "I think Graham really came into his own this weekend. No matter how much pressure we were under he played extremely well and his pull up jumper is suddenly really solid." Jorgensen said in closing.
In other games, DP Todd and Quesnel were to meet in a quarter final match in the early afternoon with the winner moving on to play either John McInnis or College Heights at 4:30 PM. The two Prince George schools, seeded #1 and #2, were to square off in the semi final game at 11:30 AM. The loser dropping back to the B side of the tournament in an attempt to reach the final and a rematch with their cross town rival.
