Emotionally and physically spent from their morning loss to DP Todd, the Dr Kearney Cougars fell 49-45 to the Fort Nelson Huskies in a Consolation Bracket game this afternoon. Originally slated for 6 PM the game was moved up to accommodate the two northern team’s desire to get home Saturday night.
The loss dropped the Cougars to sixth at the North Central Zone tournament but failed to dampen the enthusiasm of head coach Lars Jorgensen. "I was happy enough with the boys" he said. "They were really worn out after our loss this morning. The earlier than expected start time probably hurt us a bit in that we started slowly and I went to the bench a lot too. Almost everyone played in this one because it is our last game of the year. Eric Hansen scored 17 points for his best total of the tournament and Graham Spitzer had ten."
Spitzer was named the Cougars MVP by tournament organizers. The Cougars were voted the Most Sportsmanlike Team at the Zones and will be hosting the Tournament themselves, in 2010.
Earlier in the day, top seeded John McInnis cruised past College Heights and into the Championship game set for later tonight. DP Todd Trojans were upset by an improving Quesnel team 59 – 55 and dropped to fourth place. Quesnel and College Heights were on the floor when the Kearney Cougars were boarding their bus. No score is yet available.
