Businesses in Tumbler Ridge are shut down today due to a town-wide power outage.

BC Hydro says over 17 hundred customers lost power around 5:30 yesterday night.

Emergency Co-ordinator Kim Issac says no businesess are operating today, except for the health center.

The outage occurred at a substation in a remote area, about 20 minutes outside of Chetwynd. The location prevented repair crews from access to the site until daylight today.

One of the three power lines was discovered burned, and a faulty binding wire is believed to be the cause of the fire.

Issac says residents are invited to come to town hall for a free lunch.

BC hydro is currently sending a helicopter into the remote area, and expects power to be restored by late this afternoon to early this evening.
