Dawson Creek looking to go bagless

A new program in Dawson Creek could eliminate a large amount of plastic bags distributed by businesses in the area.

The Chamber of Commerce is looking into the Bagless B.C. program, where the Chamber purchases a large quantity of reusable bags and sells them to small businesses for a reasonable price.

Dawson Creek Chamber of Commerce Manager Stefani Oestreich says the program is perfect for the city.

Businesses get discounts for ordering large quantities of bags. Oestreich says many of the city’s small businesses cannot afford to order 50 thousand reusable bags.

Currently, bags cost up to two dollars and 50 cents each. However, under the new program, bags could cost just 85 cents each.

None of the bags have been ordered yet, because the Chamber wants to see if there is an appetite amongst business owners.

She says the program fits with the city’s green priorities.

The idea was distributed by a company in Victoria. Oestreich says the project was tested in the Comox Valley. The proposal was then sent to all chambers in B.C.

Oestreich says Fort St. John currently has the proposal and it’s up to the Chamber of Commerce to put it in motion.
