NDP to change Flaring Tax

On the provincial election campaign trail, Energy Minister Blair Lekstrom has noted, only the New Democrats would announce intentions, to generate $400 million in tax revenue, from one of BC’s most important industries, without knowing who or what, they were taxing.

The acting Peace River North MLA was referring, to the NDP’s proposed three year tax on flaring, which experts say, would actually generate about 61 million dollars, in revenue.

That’s sent the New Democrats into damage control retreat and, campaign official Gerry Scott now says, the party intends to charge a royalty, on all escaped gas…not only the portion that’s flared.

It is part of their overall policy, to scrap the provincial carbon tax and, move in other directions, to try and reduce carbon emissions.
