Fort Nelson youth to represent Canada

A young Fort Nelson athlete has been named to the Canadian Tae Kwon Do team.

Derek Bulley has been named to the squad, after a gold medal performance at the recent Western Canadian championship, aka. the ‘Tiger Balm Games’.  He won the Blue Belt Category, despite being rated at only an Orange Belt (three levels lower).

Bulley’s mother, Cathy Hooper, says her son took up Tae Kwon Do in 2007, when the Fort Nelson rec centre collapsed.  She admits, heading into the Western Canadian Championship (his first competition), she was a little nervous.  But, the 10 year-old showed tremendous focus, despite sparring at such a high level.

Bulley will now compete for Canada at the World Martial Arts Games in Ocean City, Maryland, in August 2009.
