Major upgrades to Gordon M. Schrum Generation Station

The Gordon M. Shrum Generation Station in Hudson’s Hope will be receiving some upgrades beginning this year.

BC Hydro announced some of the key equipment in the power plant is in poor health and represents a risk to reliability. The station is located next to the W.A.C. Bennett Dam on the Peace River.

There are six projects scheduled.

The first will undergo Turbine Rehabilitation to Generating Units 1 to 5. The Turbines represent 12 per cent of BC Hydro’s electricity producing capacity. BC Hydro says the replacement of the turbines will improve efficiency. The entire project is expected to be complete by 2017, and is expected to cost around 50 million dollars. Due to the large amount of money required for the project, BC Hydro will be consulting the British Columbia Utilities Commission, to see if project is in the public’s interest.

Other projects include Generator Stators Replacement, Transformer Replacement and Station Service Replacement.
