More than two hundred people attended the opening ceremonies of the two-day conference, and were given purple wristbands on the way in.

Paulette Flamond, from the Native Economic Development Advisory Board, explains the wrist-bands reflect the overall goal of the conference.

The event’s mission is to provide individuals with tools to make positive changes in their lives, and to find inner strength to improve their lifestyles.

She says it takes 21 days to break a bad habit, and the wristbands can help participants develop a positive mindset, rather than focusing on the gossiping, criticism, and complaining of others.

Meanwhile, Dr. Evan Adams spoke to the crowd about his life as an actor and doctor. Adams is best known for his role in the movie, Smoke Signals.

The Conference will continue Tuesday and Wednesday, with other keynote speakers and workshops throughout both days.
