Liard River Fire continues to grow

Fire crews are still battling the Liard River Fire, which has now reached more than 230 square kilometers in size.

Fire Information Officer Jillian Chimko says the fire is now 30 per cent contained, after burning for more than two weeks.

Firefighters are now getting extra help from Ontario crews, who were flown in on Friday. Residents in Coal River, Fireside, and Muddy River Indian Reserve #1 remain on evacuation alert, after two evacuation orders were sent out during the past two weeks.

Meanwhile, Chimko says this summer is looking to be drier than usual. She says anyone out in the backcountry should take extra precaution when handling fires.

There is currently a fire ban on category 2 and 3 fires in provincial parks and on public lands. The Prince George Fire Center is also advising ATV motorists to take precaution when driving in the backcountry.

ATVs and motorcycle exhaust systems produce extreme heat, which could ignite any dry materials in the area.
