Liard Smith River Fire growth slows

The Smith Liard River Fire is now 15% contained.

Over the weekend crews were able to slow the growth of the fire that now sits at 13,444 hectares in size. The fire on the north side of the Alaska Highway is not contained, while the fire on the south side of the highway is contained.

The fire continues to move in a northwestern direction away from Fireside, Coal River and the Alaska Highway.

Currently 92 firefighters, 6 pieces of heavy equipment and 5 helicopters are working the fire.

The Alaska Highway remains open, but expect delays in the area.  The communities of Fireside, Coal River and Muddy River First Nation #1 are still on evacuation alert.
