One northern fire nearly contained

Officials say the three fires burning in Northern BC are all lightning caused.

Fire crews have confirmed that they have the Smith/Liard fire around 35 per cent contained. The blaze remains at 231 square kilometers in size.

Meanwhile, Fire information Officer Jillian Chimko says the fire burning 50 kilometers away from the Smith/Liard fire is now 60 per cent contained.

She says the Ontario crews remain up north, helping local crews battle the fire. However, the fire near Prophet River that’s nearly 300 hectares in size continues to burn.

Chimko says the fire is nearing a structure. She says doesn’t know if the building is occupied.

All three fires have been caused by lightning storms in the area. Chimko says this year’s lightning-caused fire numbers are on par with last year’s numbers.
