Canfor to re-open MacKenzie Mill


The Prince George Citizen reports Canfor Corporation has confirmed it will have one of its Mackenzie sawmills, down for almost one year, back in operation before the end of this month.

The newspaper says the mill is scheduled for start-up July 20th ,and the company hopes to begin operating with close to 70 employees on two shifts. It’s expected about two weeks after the mill is going again, the planer will also be back in operation.

The company has already invested about $3 million to install chip bins, where trucks will be loaded for chip delivery, to Prince George pulp mills.

The residents of Mackenzie have seen all their major forest manufacturing plants shut down, in the past two years.

The newspaper says Canfor has sited an improved investment climate in the community, which includes reduced property taxes, adjusted provincial timber pricing and, wage reductions as keys to resumption of sawmill operation.

Canfor employed as many as 450 workers at its two mills in Mackenzie, prior to the economic downturn, which also similar company facilities in Chetywnd, Fort Nelson and Prince George.
