Local dignitaries broke ground on Wednesday to celebrate the construction of the new Fort St. John hospital.

Senator Richard Neufeld, Pat Pimm, Karen Goodings and Bruce Lantz were just some of the local leaders that were on hand to mark the occasion.

The new hospital will be located on a 40 hectare piece of land, between 86th and 79th street. Neufeld says he thinks the location is ideal.

The new hospital will replace the ageing facility downtown, and will have 55-beds for acute care and a 123-bed residential care facility. Both facilities will be linked together by an indoor-passage way.

The total project cost is 279 million dollars, which includes 98 million dollars from the Peace River Regional District.

Some communities have concerns that Fort St. John’s new hospital may take away from surrounding hospitals. But, CEO of Northern Health, Kathy Ulrich reassures residents that this will not happen.

Construction is expected to begin immediately, with the anticipated completion date in the spring of 2012.
