This map shows the location of the Sikanni River.

The Fort Nelson RCMP confirmed today the search of the Sikanni River, for a 36 year old unidentified resident of Prophet River has been suspended.

It says he fell out of his kayak, while trying to negotiate an extremely dangerous set of rapids and whirlpools, with two friends on Friday afternoon.

The incident occurred about three hours southeast of Fort Nelson on the Sikanni, and all three men were thrown from their inflatable kayaks. Two of them made it to shore and then hiked about two kilometers to the Sikanni River Outfitters camp, from where the RCMP got the missing person call at about 5pm Friday.

After searching all day Saturday and Sunday, police and search and rescue personnel failed to locate the body and called off the search on Sunday night. The Fort Nelson RCMP confirmed on Monday it has determined the missing man was not wearing an approved flotation device, nor a helmet and apparently had no white water kayaking experience.
