The North Wind Healing Centre Society is looking to expand its operations into Pouce Coupe.

Executive Director Isaac Hernandez made a presentation to the Peace River Regional District on Thursday morning. He requested a letter of support from the board.

The society is interested in the Pouce Coupe Care Home building that is currently vacant, and owned by Northern Health. If the Healing Centre obtains the Pouce Coupe building, it plans to establish a detox centre that will be available to everyone.

Hernandez says there is no detox centre north of Prince George, except for the one in Grande Prairie. However, Hernandez says the cost for one month of treatment there is unrealistic to many residents in the area.

Hernandez says the group will approach Northern Health and ask for the building to be donated to the society.

North Wind Healing is a Dawson Creek-based trauma treatment centre for Aboriginal and non-aboriginal people that are struggling with addictions or abuse. Applicants undergo a 45 day residential healing and trauma treatment program. The applicant must have stopped using narcotics 14 days prior to admission.

Now Fort St. John Mayor and Director Bruce Lantz suggested that he would like to see more advertising from the society, which states both Aboriginals and non-aboriginals are welcome in the treatment program.

Hernandez says he agrees with Lantz, and that the society will aim at achieving that goal.

In the end, the Regional District says they will be in contact with the society in the upcoming days with a decision regarding a letter of support.
