MLA Pat Pimm awards men who rescued boy on river

Peace River North MLA Pat Pimm awarded five men with bravery awards on Thursday, for saving the life of a three year-old boy.

On Sunday July 12th, 2009 three year-old Demetrius Jones went missing after he drove his truck down the boat launch at Peace Island Park and into the Peace River.

Don Loewen, Dwayne Paulovich, Doug Marquardt, Darrin Paynter and Wayne Hotte jumped into their boat and searched for the boy.

Several hours later, he was found 12 kilometres downstream in the water clinging to his toy truck. Don Loewen jumped into the water and rescued the boy.

Loewen says the water was freezing cold.

The volunteers are acquaintances of the family, and reunited the boy with his grandparents shortly after the rescue.

Marquardt says the whole ordeal was truly a miracle.

On Monday August 31st Pimm rose in the BC Legislature and paid tribute to the heroism, bravery and quick thinking of the five men.

Pimm says several times during the speech, he got choked up. Pimm says even when he watched the speech again on Thursday, his eyes started to well-up.

The men were given a copy of Pimm’s legislature speech and the bravery awards.
