Jon Zacks and I, along with the FSJ Senior Flyers, arrived in Onion Lake Saskatchewan about 20 minutes ago and as I sat down to write this blog the Lloydminster Border Kings have just arrived as well. We are looking forward to this one as the Flyers look to bounce back from last night’s loss, although Coach Brash was pretty upbeat after last night’s game. The new break-out and the new puck possession style of hockey seemed to work quite well for the Flyers and Brash pointed to how easily they were able to enter the Stony Plain zone with possession as proof that the system worked. So the coaching staff will be looking for more of the same tonight.
The main problem that the Flyers ran into last night was rust. Several times a pass was just out of reach or a loose puck was not recovered costing the Flyers a scoring chance or causing an odd man rush the other way. When Stony Plain got a chance they buried it and that was the difference. That’s just rust and once that rust starts to get shaken off the Flyers will be in good shape. The line of Brough between Carter and Manitowich looked great and the Flyers have to be happy with what Manny can bring to the table. Oh and how about Donny Lloyd? A goal and 3 assists for 4 points in a game the Flyers scored 4 goals. What makes that even more impressive? It was only the 3rd or 4th time Lloyd had hit the ice so far this season. He said he was gassed in the third but you have to think he will still see a tonne of ice time again today, if nothing else Lloyd will be getting back into shape.
This afternoon it will be the young guns drawing into the lineup. Peebles and Waberski aren’t in Onion Lake today along with Ashlee Langdon. So that means Fast, Horst, Jeff Shipton and Novak should all draw into the lineup today. Those guys will be hoping to impress and could come out flying to use a bad pun. Fast and Shipton were both good during last year’s exhibition series in Stony Plain. I also heard reports that the line of Novak, Shipton and Horst was very good last weekend against Grande Prairie. And I am sure all of those guys are itching to get out on the ice.
To be honest we don’t yet know much about the Border Kings. They had 35 guys listed on their roster and we still aren’t entirely sure who will be playing and who will be sitting in the stands. We should have all of that info for you during the pregame show. Jon Zacks is actually scurrying around the rink right now trying to get all of the info you need to get set for this game. So join us in about an hour as the Flyers take on the 2007 Allan Cup Champion Lloydminster Border Kings.
