More non-profits present 2010 funding requests

Fort St. John City Councilors continue to consider funding requests from local non-profit organizations.

During the Committee of the Whole meeting on Tuesday night, two groups came out to present their request.

Representatives from the Whiskey Jack Nordic Ski Club are asking for $1,500 – the same amount the club received last year.

Volunteer Ben Mitchell-Banks says this money will go towards grooming the Links Trails.

Now, the North Peace Museum is requesting $50,000, which is $40,000 more than last year’s request.

Museum Manager Daria Dolsen says the museum has received funding from the B.C. Gaming Grants.  This year, she says those funds are being scaled back, and the museum cannot depend on that money.

Dolsen says if the City decides to grant the museum this extra money, the funds will go towards operating costs, added exhibits and increased advertising.

This is the second round of discussions that Council is holding over the Grant-in-Aid allocations.

Last year, Council awarded non-profits a total of $924,724. It’s expected that number will increase as many non-profits are looking for increased funding for 2010.

Council will once again listen to more non-profits requests on October 19th and 26th.
