A brief look at some weekend results from some of Fort St. John’s minor hockey teams:
The Petroleum Association tier-2 Midget Flyers traveled to Grande Prairie on Friday night for an exhibition game against the Spartans.
The Flyers got off to a slow start, but the goaltending of Travis McLean held them in the game until the offence got going. In the second, the midgets outscored their hosts 3-0, and they held on for a 6-3 win. Dayne Pederson, Jordan Gies, Cayle Bell, Brett Young, Sean Ryder, and Marvin Yahey all scored goals for Fort St. John.
The Knight of Columbus Bantam AA Flyers were also in Grande Prairie this weekend, and also posted a win, in a more defensive battle. Fort St. John led 2-0 heading into the third, and had to withstand a late charge from G.P. and some third period penalties, in a 3-2 win. Sean Gjerenes and Ty Helgason split the duties in goal for the Flyers, while Jayton Wieler, Justin Taylor, and Braden Donis scored the goals.
The Fort St. John Kinsmen Atom Flyers hosted the Dawson Creek Atom Canucks in an exhibition game at the Enerplex on Saturday. This one saw the Flyers jump out to an early lead, courtesy of a hat-trick from Jacob Lang. Dawson Creek spent the rest of the game playing comeback, but could never get back to even, thanks in part to some strong goaltending from Craig Grimes. The Atom Flyers won the game 5-3.
And, the newly-formed Formula Powell Midget ‘B’ Flyers had their first outing of the season – an exhibition game in Dawson on Friday. Tyson Chambers led the way offensively with 2 goals and 2 assists, while Nico Mitchell chipped in 2+1, as the team opened play with a 6-3 win.
