Regional directors deliberate Chetwynd to Taylor highway

The Peace River Regional District is looking at developing a highway from Chetwynd to Taylor.

Directors reviewed the recommendation in a report from the Electoral Area Directors Committee on Friday afternoon.

The recommendation suggested the board send a letter to both the Peace River North and South MLA’s, urging them to put a priority on highway construction.

But, Director Karen Anderson of Hudson’s Hope said she would like to see a feasibility study conducted first. She said the study would outline the needs and potential costs associated with the development, similar to the studies conducted on the Pine Pass.

However, in a majority vote, directors voted to send a letter to both MLA’s detailing the importance of the highway, and agreed to send a request to the Northern Development Initiative Trust to conduct a feasibility study.

Director Anderson and Director Mike Bernier of Dawson Creek opposed the ammended recommendation.
