The Fort St. John wrestling club took 13 athletes to a tournament in MacKenzie this weekend. It was the first action of the season, and for some of them, the first competition ever.
Darryl McGinnis had no fear, as he crushed both of his opponents in the Elementary Age class. McGinnis won his first gold medal, and impressed Coach Paul Kalas with his potential.
In the Grade 7-9 age class, Delillad Meservy and Rolene Oliarny both learned valuable lessons en route to silver medal finishes, while Taylor McLeod displayed some smart fighting to earn a silver medal as well.
A highlight matchup saw Fort St. John wrestlers Nolan McLain and Robert Ticehurst battling heads-up, after McLain jumped up a weight class. Ticehurst had been dominating the class, and beat McLain en route to a gold medal finish, while McLain claimed a bronze.
In the grade 10-12 age class, Logan Lybbert wrestled up an age class and also brought home a silver medal.
The coaches report Devon Shelkie, Tim White, Brannan McLain, Justin Peck, Leslie Erker, and Vikki Punter all wrestled well and will keep improving with their hard work at practice.
