The Senior Flyers opened 2010 with a 6-5 exhibition loss to Alberta’s Augustana College on Saturday night.
Featuring a handful of new and out-of-town players, the Flyers jumped out to a 2-1 first period lead, courtesy of wraparound goals from Ryan Carter and Todd Alexander.
Fort St. John quickly added to the lead in the second, on a rebound goal from Dawson Creek’s Chris Stevens, and the second of the game from Ryan Carter.
But, the wheels soon fell off, as Augustana poured four goals past Troy Hunt, to take a 5-4 lead after 20 minutes.
Augustana’s goals on the night were scored by Stephen Cavanagh, Matt Schneider, Joel Chrisholm, Richard Dupre, and Ben Starbuck.
The visiting Vikings effectively shut down the Flyers in the third, but with Hunt pulled for an extra attacker, Ryan Manitowich fired past Augustana’a back-up Paul Kalida, to send the game to overtime.
Despite a penalty to Fort St. John’s Tyler Brough in the extra-frame, the five-minute period would solve nothing, and the game would go to a shootout.
The shootout only needed four rounds to complete, with Augustana converting on two shots, and the Flyers unable to beat Kalida, and the Vikings escaped with a 6-5 win.
The Flyers are expecting to ice a slightly different lineup for the second leg of the exhibition series. Sunday’s game starts at 1 p.m. at the North Peace Arena.
