Mayor Lantz engages in small claims battles

The Mayor of Fort St. John, Bruce Lantz, is involved in two seperate small claims valued at more than $20,000 each.

Both involve contracted work on Lantz’s new home in Rose Prairie from August 2007 until January 2009.

Lantz filed a Notice of Claim with the Provincial Court of British Columbia, against Handyman Contracting’s Andy Urich.  In those court documents, Lantz claims the work was substandard and there was an overpayment for roofing shingles.   In the statement of claim, Lantz also says that the cost of completion, "unfinished or substandard" work, the cost of incomplete insulation work, and other expenses were the factors in the claim.

Lantz’s claim totals more than $25,000.

But Urich claims that Lantz did not pay in full for all of the work he did on Lantz’s property.  Once the work was completed, Urich claims Lantz changed his mind on several aspects of the contracted work.  He says he’s willing to negotiate with Lantz on the bill, but if he can’t get a satisfactory resolution, will consider filing his own claim. A court scheduled settlement conference has not be set for this case yet.

Meanwhile, Timothy O’Sullivan from TEC Mechanical has filed a claim against Lantz.

O’Sullivan’s claim amounts to more than $23,000.   In the statement of claim, O’Sullivan says that the amount is for back payments and interest for plumbing work done on the house.  The court has scheduled a settlement conference for February 17th, 2010.

O’Sullivan confirmed that he did work on Lantz’s house. O’Sullivan says he filed a Notice of Claim against Lantz because of unpaid bills.

Lantz was available for comment, but says neither claim impacts his position as mayor, and he declined to comment on the documents.
