The Alaska Highway might become a National Historic Site.

At the Fort St. John City Council meeting on Monday afternoon, councilors voted unanimously to voice their support for the highway’s nomination.

Spearheading the nomination process is Outreach Coordinator Kathleen O’Neill with the Northern BC Tourism Association.

The NBCTA was contracted by the Peace River Regional District to conduct an inventory of key sites and heritage features along the highway in the region.

O’Neill says the highway would bring much-needed recognition to northern BC.

Key sites range from everything from the monument in Charlie Lake to the Kiskatinaw Bridge outside of Taylor.

She says while there might be some heritage sites located on private property, the prestigious designation won’t place any limitations on property owners.

O’Neill hopes to get support from community leaders and residents before the end of March.

All letters of support will be forwarded to Parks Canada, and if approved, the designation could be granted by 2017, which is also the 150th Anniversary of Canada.
