The City of Fort St. John is getting a glimpse of the ‘Edge of the Sun’.

At the City Council meeting on Monday afternoon, Councilors listened to a presentation by Jerry Lemmon from EWD Consulting Corp.

He pitched a new spin on the proposed Energy Interpretive Centre that would see the facility dovetail the area’s energy culture and aboriginal culture together.

Jerry referred to the building as the "The SAA MAA Centre" or the "Edge of the Sun Centre."

Councilor Lori Ackerman favored the idea of holding seminars and sessions in the facility during the winter months….

Jerry says that actually could be a large form of revenue in the ‘off’ season.

The project would be split into ten-phases. And since the city has already allocated $2 million in the 2010 budget, Jerry says this is a perfect time to hit the road running.

The City’s allocated contribution is actually a federal and provincial grant. It’s set to expire in 24 months, and if the city doesn’t use the money for the facility, the funds will dry-up.

Councilor Trevor Bolin remained cautiously optimistic.

But, Jerry says both Treaty 8 and the North Peace Economic Development Commission have committed to funding a chunk of the initial research.

He predicts the energy industry will jump on-board once they hear the proposal.

In the end, councilors voted unanimously to head into phase one through four of the project. This will include drafting up a master plan and a funding plan, determining an appropriate site selection, and setting up a fund development committee.

Councilors will then have a choice to head in to the next phases, which will be submitted sometime before June.
