Gas well still burning outside of Hythe

By staff

The gas well fire near Hythe, Alberta is still burning, as of 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday.

The fire broke out at around 3:00 a.m., when Canadian Natural Resources workers were drilling a sweet gas well. Reports indicate the workers were not injured in the process.

Although the cause of the fire has yet to be determined, RCMP officials claim the blow-out was likely an industrial accident and poses no public danger.

Anti-oil activist Wiebo Ludwig’s property boarders the well site, about 22 kilometres northwest of Hythe.

Witness accounts say the entire area smells like rotten eggs.

The Dawson Creek RCMP detachment has sent out a statement, indicating the fire is out of control.

It also indicated that a large, black plume of smoke is rising from the site, though no evacuations are currently in place.

Officers say the area is being assessed and the air quality is being monitored.
