A Fort St. John police officer is recovering after nearly losing two of his fingers during a routine call on Monday.

It all began when police received a complaint at around 9:45 a.m. that a youth had attacked his father. Police were informed the 16 year-old male had stolen his mother’s vehicle, and was heading south on the 101 Road.

The unidentified male attempted to evade police by driving erratically, and weaving into the oncoming lane. Rather than putting the public in danger, police say they elected to stop their pursuit and search for the youth afterwards.

An hour later, RCMP members found the male at the Totem Mall.

A statement released by the RCMP indicates that a police officer told the male that he was under arrest, and then attempted to subdue the youth.

The youth allegedly began resisting arrest, and in the process, bit the officer’s fingers.

Additional officers arrived, and the male was arrested.

The officer was taken to the Fort St. John hospital, where he received stitches for his wounds. While the officer didn’t lose any fingers, he did lose both fingernails.

The male has been transferred to the Fort St. John Hospital under the Mental Health Act, and criminal charges are being considered.
